Alternative Process Photography: Van Dyke Prints

September 19, 2008

Brown is Beautiful!

So you’ve probably noticed a really eclectic mix of work on this blog lately. That’s because I’m trying lots of new things to broaden my horizons. These prints were made using the Van Dyke Process. Without getting totally technical, the paper is hand coated with a light sensitive concoction of chemicals and then exposed to light. I made digital negatives for these prints. It’s really fun and I am learning to embrace/exploit the “imperfections” of the process. This is part of an alternative process photography class that I am taking at Washburn University this semester.

I am going to enter some of these in the Alt Process Photography Competition at the Texas Photographic Society.

Biodiversity Is…

I created a new series of images entitled R•EVOLUTION specifically for this upcoming show at the University of Kansas Natural History Museum. The theme of this show is biodiversity and will feature the work of 12 different artists who combine their interests in art with the interests of science. The show will feature 3 of my photographs from this series.

The show has received some press and the Lawrence Journal World ran an article about the collaboration in todays paper.

There will be public reception for the artists!

Artist Statement for R•EVOLUTION

What if animal and plant life could evolve at an accelerated pace to meet the challenges of their environment? Would these life forms adapt to better defend themselves against the selfish plight of humans? Would they evolve to peacefully coexist with mankind, or would they develop a complex means to wage war against us? These are questions that I investigate in this series of photographs.

I begin each photograph by creating an installation sculpture to present the specimen. The camera plays an important role in capturing and isolating the subject matter presented in each tableau. Many of the items I use to create these sculptures are perishable, and aren’t practical for presentation in a typical gallery setting. The camera allows me to present these maquettes to the viewer without distraction.

Huff n’ Puff Hot Air Balloon Festival – Topeka, Kansas

September 12, 2008

Above photographs by Daniel W. Coburn – copyright 2008

About a week ago I decided to go out to the annual hot air balloon festival at Lake Shawnee here in Topeka. This was just one of those instances begging to be photograph in color. The balloons illuminated at night created an almost surreal landscape. I did walk away with some good black and white photographs as well. I’ll share those later. Enjoy! and please leave me some feedback and critique in the comments section.

Digital Collage: Venus of Hollywood

September 7, 2008

Above: Digital Collage “Venus of Hollywood” by Daniel W. Coburn

I recently finished the first project due for my Advanced Digital Photography class at Washburn University. Our goal was to choose a group of people, find or take photographs of those people, and then morph the images into a portrait of some sort. I chose a group of celebutante’s as my group which included Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Christina Aguilera.

The composition is loosely based off of Botticelli’s depiction of the goddess in his painting “The Birth of Venus” which is pictured below. So let me know what you think. Any words of critique, praise, or hatred are welcome.
