Biodiversity Is…

I created a new series of images entitled R•EVOLUTION specifically for this upcoming show at the University of Kansas Natural History Museum. The theme of this show is biodiversity and will feature the work of 12 different artists who combine their interests in art with the interests of science. The show will feature 3 of my photographs from this series.

The show has received some press and the Lawrence Journal World ran an article about the collaboration in todays paper.

There will be public reception for the artists!

Artist Statement for R•EVOLUTION

What if animal and plant life could evolve at an accelerated pace to meet the challenges of their environment? Would these life forms adapt to better defend themselves against the selfish plight of humans? Would they evolve to peacefully coexist with mankind, or would they develop a complex means to wage war against us? These are questions that I investigate in this series of photographs.

I begin each photograph by creating an installation sculpture to present the specimen. The camera plays an important role in capturing and isolating the subject matter presented in each tableau. Many of the items I use to create these sculptures are perishable, and aren’t practical for presentation in a typical gallery setting. The camera allows me to present these maquettes to the viewer without distraction.
