5 of my recent artworks have been chosen for the upcoming Student Exhibition at the Mulvane Art Museum in Topeka. The show opens Friday with a public reception for the artists from 5 to 8pm. The show was juried by Armon Means, Assistant Professor, Photography at Kansas State University. The show will include works by several students at Washburn.
This was a great opportunity for me to show some of my photographic and non-photographic works. Three of my alternative/nonsilver process photographs will be exhibited along with a mixed media collage and a zoetrope (pictured below.)
The Melancholic Zoetrope

Melancholic Zoetrope copyright 2008 Daniel W. Coburn
The zoetrope was a precursor to modern motion picture. A series of sequential still images on a paper strip could be placed inside a drum and the animation could be viewed through slits in the drum as it was spinning. My zoetrope is a contemporary version of this technology. A series self portraits are placed inside this vertically positioned wheel. The wheel is spun by a variable speed electric motor. As the wheel spins you can see my facial expression changing. Melancholia is one of the 4 humors associated with different personality types. During renaissance times the Melancholic personality was associated with the troubled life of the struggling artist. Durer identified himself with the melancholic humor. This personality is closely associated with mood swings and mixed feelings of inferiority and/or delusions of grandeur. The wheel is lighted by a small bulb which adds to the experience. The entire piece was engineered and built from scrap wood, electronics and photography by yours truly :c)
